Heritage and Museums:

The historic Pajama Factory was awarded the prestigious designation of being placed on the National Registry of Historic Places and has been an important icon for Williamsport for 150 years.  The factory was built between 1883 and 1919 by the Lycoming Rubber Company, a subsidiary of the U.S. Rubber Company—one of the largest manufacturers of rubber goods in the U.S. The Lycoming division made tennis shoes, KEDS sneakers, gym and yachting shoes as well as some miscellaneous rubber-related products.

After 1932, the Rubber Company moved out due to a drastic decline in product demand and, until 1979, various companies utilized the space including pajama, underwear, and shoe manufacturers. The Weldon Pajama Company leased space in the building beginning in 1934 and purchased the entire complex in 1951. It became the largest pajama factory in the world. In fact, the factory was scouted and used as a model for the 1950s Broadway musical (and later the movie), “The Pajama Game,” starring Doris Day.

Today, the 8 buildings, representing 300,000 square feet of space, house over 160 tenants including artist studios and small businesses. There is over ½ mile of ‘gallery hall’ space throughout the 2nd-4th floors -the largest display of art in northeastern PA. So, even if the artist studios aren’t open (as most tenants in the community work behind closed doors), there is still plenty to explore walking the hallways or relaxing in the courtyard with a cup of coffee from the coffee shop located on the ground floor.

There are also 3 event spaces in the facility, a community kitchen, two Airbnb’s (top rated in PA listings) and a non-profit-‘Factory Works’-that houses a woodworking shop (which is often open), a bike recycle shop, a darkroom, a pottery studio. And there is one of the largest suppliers of art supplies located there as well. Renovations have been ongoing for the last 16 years as this wonderful city resource continues to be updated.

Stay:

The historic Pajama Factory was awarded the prestigious designation of being placed on the National Registry of Historic Places and has been an important icon for Williamsport for 150 years.  Today, the 8 buildings, representing 300,000 square feet of space, house over 160 tenants including artist studios and small businesses and a few residences including two Airbnb’s- each one designed by a different artist and hosted by a ‘Superhost’. Both units have a fully equipped bathroom, kitchen and sitting area. Importantly, these units have the benefit of providing guests with ‘gallery halls’- over ½ mile of artwork posted in hallways throughout the building and right outside their door. There is also a wonderful coffee shop located downstairs in the building. The Pajama Factory is located a few blocks from Penn College, 5 miles to the Little League International World Series Complex, and a mile from downtown nightlife and restaurants. Beautiful hikes and great fly fishing are located a short drive away in almost any direction.
