Taber Museum presents “Reprise: Use of Coded Spirituals in the Underground Railroad.”

January 13 @ 2:00 pm

On Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 2 p.m. The Taber Museum will host a program entitled “Reprise: Use of Coded Spirituals in the Underground Railroad – and in the Making of North Star,” featuring portions of the documentary Follow the North Star to Freedom. The program is free and open to the public.

Created by writer and film-maker Karen Frock a quarter-century ago, the groundbreaking documentary tells the story of efforts here to help enslaved persons reach freedom via the Underground Railroad. She will be on hand to comment on the excerpts, which feature the Ebenezer Baptist Choir and soloists performing portions of some songs that were used as codes in the Underground Railroad.

The showing coincides with the Historical Society’s winter exhibit with the theme of “Stars.” On display are a number of quilts, coverlets, furniture and other decorative arts that feature stars as a central motif. The exhibit continues through Saturday, January 20. The documentary also provides an introduction to Black History Month, celebrated February 1 through March 1.
