New Jersey accountant George and Oakland housewife Doris meet at northern California inn. After a one-night affair, they agree to meet once a year, despite the fact that they are each married and have six children between them. Over the course of the next 24 years, they develop an emotional intimacy deeper than what one would expect to find in such a clandestine relationship.
